Elne

Situated 4 Km from the sea at the foot of the Pyrenees, the ancient town of Elne was the eclectic capital of the Roussillon from 568 to 1602. The magnificent 10th-century Romanesque Cathedral still exists today, along with the blue-veined marble cloister built between the 12th and 14th centuries. Its lively market, which takes place in the town centre on Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning all year round, is a reflection of Elne's 1,000-year-old agricultural tradition. There is a craft market which takes place on Sunday morning and a number of festivals through the year

Corneilla Del Vercol

Local village to the house, very friendly, strong southern catalan dialect (lots of pointing required). Best bread around, mornings and evenings. Chateau sells local co-operative and regional wines. Large Pharmacy to far side of village. Golf driving range on route to village.

Collioure

Located 27 Km south east of Perpignan, the charming village of Collioure is beautifully situated between two small ports. Three sheltered beaches line the harbour, which is dominated by the masive Chateau Royal designed in the 17th century for Charles V by military architect Vauban. A visit to the lighthouse at the tip of the northern port affords a spectacular view of the town and its imposing fortress.

This brightly coloured fishing village has long been an attraction for artists, most notably Mattisse. Art galleries now line the cobbled streets which run through the town. This is our favourite spot, a great place for a leisurely lunch looking accross the bay, or just a coffee on a Sunday morning. Collioure is about 20 mions from the house. It is a good idea to park in the 'Stad' car park at the top of town and stroll through the streets as the town gets busy in high season. Collioure is a good place for arty type gifts to take home and a great place to draw and paint.
